MAKIN JANMA, originally from Hong Kong and based in London, where he worked on film projects, wrote screenplays as a filmmaker, created clothing for characters in his films, and presented fashion collections rooted in cinema. This leather jacket is one piece born from that creative process. In recent years, more and more designers have been creating clothing based on similar concepts, haven’t they? JANMA is a pioneer—or rather, an iconic figure—in this movement. Whether it was the silhouettes or the details, the independent fashion scene of the 2010s had a unique style and explosive energy. Partly as a reaction to the quiet trends in fashion today, it was an era that caught my attention in certain circles. Back then, these were leather jackets with super-narrow silhouettes made from extremely soft sheep leather—the kind men would commonly wear—and they were packed with intricate details. The construction around the pockets and the design of the hood, in particular, are truly impressive. I think it was an era of design where a distinct identity was firmly established—in the sense that there were simply no other garments quite like them. I really want people who aren’t familiar with that era to give them a try.
