Although this colorful T-shirt is from the 1980s–1990s era of ISSEY MIYAKE, it actually belongs to “odds on,” an independent in-house line at ISSEY MIYAKE where ZUCCA founder Akira Onozuka served as a designer at the time. As you can tell from its appearance, this piece incorporates the striped and grid-like brushstrokes characteristic of artist David Hockney’s paintings into its textile design. The panel seams on both the front and back are constructed entirely using patchwork stitching. Just as renowned designers of that era—such as CDG, MARTIN MARGIELA, and GIANNI VERSACE—did, this piece conveys an attitude of treating even a single T-shirt as a work of clothing craftsmanship to the fullest extent possible. Or perhaps this was, in a sense, a trend in T-shirt design at the time.
