JEAN MUIR was one of the leading fashion designers in London, primarily around the 1970s. She pursued what we would now call “quiet design,” stripping away ornamentation as much as possible. When it comes to her determination to remain “quiet” in the face of London at that time, I can’t help but feel that, in a sense, she was the most punk and steadfastly egotistical figure of all. Amid a style that never pandered to the times or the masses, her achievements and skills as a designer—including winning the “Dress of the Year” award, which crowns the world’s top dress designer, three times—can truly be described as the real deal. As for her design style, even though she eliminated ornamentation, she was, conversely, proactive in using details such as pintucks to shape the form and in structural design elements. She particularly favored effortless black dresses that made extensive use of bias cuts and crepe fabrics, but on very rare occasions, she created leatherwear like this piece—and as for this specific piece, it’s undoubtedly a garment that would be a miracle to come across.
JEAN MUIRは、主に1970年代前後のロンドンを代表するファッションデザイナーの1人でありました。可能な限り装飾性を省いた今で言うクワイエットデザインを追求していました。あの時代のロンドンに対して"静か"であり続けようとする彼女に関しては、ある意味で最もパンクで確固たるエゴイストだったような気がしてなりません。時代と群衆に一切媚びないスタイルの中、DRESS OF THE YEARという世界一のドレスデザイナーを決めるアワードを３回も獲って来るデザイナーとしての結果やスキルは、まさに本物中の本物と言えます。彼女の作風としては、装飾性を省くといっても、逆にフォルムメイクのためのピンタックであったりや衣類の構造としてのディテール的なデザインには積極的であり、特にバイアスカットやクレープ素材を多用したエフォートレスなブラックドレスを好んでおりましたが、ごく稀にこのようなレザーウェアを制作しており、本作に関して言えば、出会えたら奇跡と間違いなく言えるレベルの一着です。
